Ok. Tx for the info in this thread. I am looking into this as well. I am still evaluating/testing on the free version but I have decided to buy the combined speed-edior and studio license package in the future. So it's kind of a now or never thing with the speed editor because with this package you get one for 100€ surplus and otherwise it is going to be much more expensive. So although I don't really need one, because I am not doing that much of video editing, just a little bit, but if I can get one for a surplus of 100€ well... even if I don't really need one....
So I have been watching some YouTube videos about the speed editor and learnt for example that people were complaining that you can not re-assign the keys especially if you don't have nine cameras...
And then there are the teardown videos. So for example in this one,
starting at the 15th minute you can learn that the speed editor incorporates a commercially available microcontroller from STM. So in theory... it could be possible to even completely reprogram it. Provided you figure out how to access the programming interface of the microcontroller on the board.
Further, concerning the proprietary policy that BMD seems to have implemented concerning the exclusive use of the speed editor in combination with only DaVinciResolve, it is then very likely that they will not be willing to release the sourcecode of the firmware for the STM microcontroller to the public.
Based on what I read about the encrypted authentication between the SE and DVR, it is then apparently a dead end trying to re-implement the communication between the SE and DVR, but in theory it could be possible to reprogram the microcontroller completely to do whatever you want so for what this is worth...
Especially... when you are considering to put your SE on Ebay, because you have no use for it, then you might as well reprogram it completely to do something that would be useful to you.
