Question about installment and updates

PostTue Apr 09, 2024 9:44 am

Hi,

I downloaded Davinci Resolve 18.6.5 a month ago, and just got a pop-up for the 18.6.6 version. I downloaded and installed it, but afterwards I realized that I had not checked whether I would need to remove the 18.6.5 version first. Do I need to remove the 18.6.5 version, or does the new installer application do that for me?
I was also wondering if I can delete the installer application, since it is quite large.

Thanks in advance!

You don't have to uninstall the previous version, especially on Macs, but I've always done so with Windows out of habit. On Windows you should uninstall the Free version if upgrading to the Studio one. You can delete the installer as all current and previous versions are available on the Blackmagic website Support page.

Hi Charles,

I dowloaded the free trial version of Davinci resolve 18.6, I have a activation key but I couldn't insert anywhere, can you give me some advice about where I can put in the key to activate the version? Or I need to reinstall previous version, activate the product and after that, upgrade the program?

I guess this is an IQ test from Black Magic for the buck you pay them :D I spent about half an hour trying to install DaVinchi Studio but downloading gigabytes of free version 18.6.6 instead. And the only crime I committed was that I reinstalled Windows & naively expected either a clearly indicated download link for the STUDIO or a place to activate the software from what their site offers as a download.

What you need to do is go "https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve" , then click "DaVinchi Resolve + Free Download Now" and NOT!!! "DaVinchi Resolve Studio +.." which you need.
Then and only then will you be presented with a choice to download either Studio or beta or free version for your operating system.

BTW one of the reasons I re-installed Windows was that DaVinchi Studio previously installed on the machine at some point refused to update itself no matter what I did ...

At the top of the Resolve forum in the announcements section the release of 19 is headlined there. If you open it there is a link to the download page. You can also go directly to the Support page of the Blackmagic website to get their downloads page.

Vincente, you need to go to the download page and choose and install the Studio version. When you run Studio for the first time you will get a page like this. This is where you enter the Activation code.

The words Free to Download on the Blackmagic website means that you are free to download either version. But to activate the Studio version you need to purchase an activation key either from Blackmagic or one of their authorized resellers..

Hi,

I downloaded DaVinci Resolve 18.6. the free version. I had wanted to download the 19 version but, I would get to 45 min left on download and then the download shut down. Since the 19 never worked, I decided to go with what downloaded (18.6) . That said, I cant seem to open the software. Double click and it shows rthe software is on computer task bar but never opens. When I click on the DaVinci Resolve logo which came with the download, a prompt pops up for activation key I didn't receive this with download or don't know where to look. any help is appreciated. I am running MAC OS Sanoma 14.4.1

No doubt this is a simple case, and I missed the obvious!

thanks,
Theo

Curt, if it asks for the Activation Key you have downloaded and installed the Studio version and not the Free one. Look at my post 3 posts back.
To use the Studio version you have to purchase the Activation Key.
