Linking to Wrong Files When Importing AAF

PostMon Aug 14, 2023 2:53 am

I'm doing an offline in Avid Media Composer 2022 dot something. I just cut a one minute teaser and exported an AAF file, just like I've always done. I'm not exporting footage, but telling it to link to the media.

When I import the timeline in Resolve and uncheck "automatically import source clips...", most of the edit comes through just fine, like always. But I have two clips that are labeled properly in the timeline, but the media being displayed is from different camera cards entirely. If I right click to reveal in media pool, it links to the clip displayed, not the one labeled.
So A008_5555555_C056 is A008_5555555_C056 in Avid. When I bring the timeline into Resolve, A008_5555555_C056 is labeled A008_5555555_C056 on the timeline, but is referencing A004_3333333_C043.
(numbers for illustration purposes)

I am able to manually conform to the proper clip in the media pool, but this is strange. There's no effects or repos applied. Any ideas on this one?

Have you checked to see if there’s a timecode overlap? That’s my guess.

I'll check it out. I'm shooting on an URSA Mini 4K, and updating the reel number for the cards every time I change them.

There's no timecode overlap.

Resolve is just linking to completely wrong clips with totally different filenames. Like I mentioned, I can manually conform a clip by selecting the wrong one in the timeline and the correct one in the media pool (both with completely different names) and right click -> Conform Lock with Media Pool Clip and that works. It uses the right portion of the clip and everything then. I've also never had this problem before with linking to camera source files.

Sounds like a bug! If you can make a small reproducible test case and upload it to a file sharing site I imagine BMD will be happy to try and repro the bug themselves. If they can it’ll probably be easy to fix.

Sometimes when I import an AAF file for a timeline that was edited on Avid Media Composer or Adobe premiere, to davinci resolve, sometimes it links to wrong files and I don't understand why or how to fix it!!..

I know I can reconform clips on the timeline manually, but it would take a lifetime to check and then relink all the clips on the timeline!

Any suggestions please?

When you get it to happen and can reproduce it then submit that as a test case here. BMD will take a look and if they can reproduce it then they can fix it.

Without that it’s like going to an auto mechanic and asking them to fix a squeak that isn’t happening right now.

I had this issue on an older version of Resolve. I never worked out why this would happen with clips having different file names and timecode.
