Magic Mask and Remote Render

PostSun May 19, 2024 5:28 am

Hi all,

Maybe someone has encountered this issue before and found a solution. I've just recently started with a remote render workflow using a M1 Macbook Pro as the editing machine, a Windows PC as the rendering machine, and an Unraid server for the media files and as the project server as well.

So far the workflow between these machines have been smooth sailing and I've been able to use them remotely thanks to Tailscale. However, things started to fail in the rendering process.

The issue comes when the rendering machine tries to render a Magic Mask edit I've made.

I've tried rendering certain pats with magic mask and it has been consistently failing there. However, when I render to my editing machine, there are no issues. It only happens when using Remote Render to the rendering machine.

Does your remote render machine have access to the drive where your Magic Mask cache data is stored?

Currently it does not. Should it have access to the render cache from the editing machine? Or should I change how Resolve itself treats cache? I currently set Render Cache to 'None'

The Magic Mask function caches all the mask frames it generates to the Project's Working Folders Cache files location (set in your Project Settings) so I'd imagine any remote render station would need access to that location or it won't be able to find those frames. Maybe a more workable alternative for your setup would be if, prior to submitting any remote render export jobs, you render in place (to the shared media storage directory) any clips where you're using Magic Mask.

Doing the render in place workflow is manageable. Thanks for this! :D
