DR 18.6.5 Video + Audio + Audio Waveform Glitch

PostThu Feb 22, 2024 11:25 pm

Greetings!

It's been a while.

I just wanted to report a bothersome glitch that I've noticed after upgrading to DR 18.6.5.

Background:
My church live-streams services on Facebook and YouTube. When the live-stream doesn't work on one platform or the other, the service is downloaded from the one it worked on, the recording is edited with DR to sharpen the picture and replace the slides with clear PPT slides, and then the edited service is uploaded to the other platform.

The DaVinci Resolve Studio Glitch (v18.6.5):
I've edited the live-streamed video for my church before, and while there is sometimes evidence of lag between video and audio, it doesn't affect DaVinci Resolve's audio waveforms on the Edit page and Fairlight page (for example). In DR 18.6.5, not only do the audio and the video not align, but the audio and the audio waveforms (in the Edit page and the Fairlight page, for example) do not align!

I uninstalled DR 18.6.5, rebooted, and reinstalled 18.6.5 and it still happened.

So I downloaded the prior version of DR (18.6.4) and tried it and the issue doesn't exist. It works fine (so it's not caused by the video).

I'm not sure if this only happens with videos downloaded from Facebook, or if this happens with other videos too. (I'm busy working on this project, but thought I'd mention it while it's on my mind.)

Please fix this glitch in DR 18.6.5 (and future releases).

Thank you!

For the sake of clarity, the amount of time that the audio was misaligned from the video and the audio waveform varied from seconds to several minutes, and it would change (seemingly) at random.

Do yourself a favour and also record the stream locally while streaming!
Streams can have all sorts of issues. These are not visible in playback, but can wreck your post, not only in DR, but any professional NLE. BM is constantly optimising DR for speed, and any cure for streams with gaps or fluctuating fps would be counterproductive. So, don't expect a fix, but change your workflow. A hardware recorder would be the best.
If that's not an option, try a more primitive editing software, it may be more tolerant.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

I second Uli's suggestion to record locally. Don't edit the stream.

Blackmagic has several solutions for this.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Thank you for the suggestion, Uli Plank!

We're a small congregation, so I'm unsure if my congregation has the software/hardware to record the stream locally. (I don't work with their hardware. I only work on my personal computer.)

I found a workaround by using NVIDIA's video capture to record the playback of the downloaded stream and then edited/aligned the stable sound with the video with DR.
