People in other forums have posted this option here:

Will this portable alternative do fine the job?

Do you mean editing and grading in a 12K timeline or in an UHD timeline?

I guess swapping the proxy files with the original high-resolution files for final UHD output is okay. The process is seamless and does not affect the quality of the final 12K product, isn't it?

The idea is once the editing is complete, the proxy files can be replaced with the original high-resolution files for final output, ensuring that the final product is of the highest possible quality. Once the original footage is 12k braw, hence the question.

I think I can expect the same process about grading or am I wrong on that?

In any case, what's the best and more affordable route as of April 2024?

A Mac, maybe? ;-)
I can edit and grade 12K BRAW at 25 fps in a UHD timeline on my humble laptop without proxies, as long as I don't go overboard regarding FX, but using only some simple grades. You may need a bit more for 50 or 60 fps, if you want to avoid proxies.

And, yes, whatever you finally buy, switching to originals for final render will use the full quality of your sources on render. I doubt, though, that you will see much of a difference between sources in 12K or 8K if the result is UHD or 4K.

What's your Mac configuration?

In any case, I meant a PC workstation...

Will that laptop with RTX 4090 mobile be enough?

Or worthless for 12k sources even with proxies?

What about the difference to RTX 4090 going along the desktop route for this purpose?

Can we avoid proxies going to edit and grade straight from a 12k timeline?

With a beefy PC workstation and a 4090, you can work well without proxies as long as you don't do too much fancy stuff. BRAW is very efficient and balancing the load between CPU and GPU.

The mobile 4090 is considerably weaker and a waste of money in a laptop, IMHO. The best solution might be a cheaper laptop on the road and a beefy desktop workstation for finishing, if you need NR or speed changes. Mine does 12K with some light primary grading and is playing it smoothly, but the GPU is pretty much at full load.

Newer MacBooks should handle it even more lightly, my laptop is in the sig.
