Virtual OLPF based on XESS

PostMon Apr 29, 2024 1:42 pm

Ok, hear me out.
I know this is a filter made for games (that may or may not require actual geometry), but it's also open source and can greatly reduce the effects caused by a missing OLPF which still is quite the norm in the consumer but also prosumer market.

XESS 1.3 is an open source image enhancer and upscaler developed by Intel that uses AI but also temporal filtering and other tricks to remove moire, aliasing, flickering etc.

I really wonder if implementing it could help us dealing with action cameras, drones, phones and other cameras without an OLPF.

It needs motion vectors as one of the inputs which might or might not work as expected when using generated vectors from live-action. Practical problem might be that seriously aliased areas which could benefit probably create garbage motion vectors too.
