Video capture (VHS to MP4) in DR Studio

PostThu May 02, 2024 4:41 am

I want to digitize my VHS video to MP4, but I need extra items ( video capture device, cables, etc).

It will be wonderful if DR can also do VHS-MP4 capture as GPU has more than enough electronics to handle that, need software to tell it what to do?

Thanks.

You could probably do this with the analog inputs of the Intensity Pro 4K.

My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Capturing SD video is not compute intensive so there should be no worries there.
Just make sure:
- the black and white points are set correctly
- you capture the video interlaced
- you use exactly the right framerate
- capture with a good CODEC that allows interlaced and a sufficient bitrate

It is best to use (or rent!) a VHS with TBC to get the best possible quality.

I have done this!

The biggest problem I had to overcome was finding capture software that would ignore dropouts. Old analog tapes have lots of dropouts—just think popping tapes in and out of cameras. Even pre-blacked DV tapes can have bad frames. And every capture software I tried would stop on a bad frame. FCP, FCPX, Avid, OnLocation, PPro, iMovie, you name it…

Except dvgrab

It comes with linux. So I ran analog from a VHS or Hi-8 deck into my old PD-170, and from that into the DVin port of an old HP laptop running Ubuntu. Start up dvgrab, hit play and come back a couple hours later. I used QuickTime to trim the video (since I didn't come back soon enough) and import wherever.

YMMV
