Aspect Ratio for Timelines

PostWed May 01, 2024 4:19 pm

Hello,

I think it would be nice to have an option to choose the aspect ratio when creating a new timeline.
Resolve has standart resolutions and a Custom option, but I can't remember each resolution for different aspect ratios.
So after choosing the resolution there would be a dropdown menu with aspect ratios (2:35, 1.95, 1.80 etc).

I can't insert URL but searching for "unravel aspect ratio", it's where I get the information about each resolution for format (4k, 1080 etc...)

All the standards are there as presets already. You would only need math for something truly Custom.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

I can't remember them either, so I use the Aspect Ratio Cheat Sheet by Brad Allen of Unravel Post in Australia. It looks something like this:

There are many, many other resolutions and sizes available, so a lot depends on your specific situation and delivery requirement. Here's a link to Brad's original document:

I don't think all of them could be included as options or a drop-down menu, because there's literally about 200 different options you could choose.

You'll find the commonly used aspect ratios in the View dropdown menu.
I like to use 2.25:1 3840X1706 in UHD which I add as a custom timeline setting.
