Render In Place Bug Found

PostSun Apr 21, 2024 4:06 pm

Hi all,

This is something that doesn't happen every time, so I'm not sure what's going on. Sometimes when I perform a Render In Place, the resulting clip flashes black frames or mixes in random other parts of the original clip. Take a look at this video showing what I mean:

I tried various Render in Place options (such as not using source resolution), and the issue persists. I also tried using Cineform after, same thing.

Source info:
H.265 10 bit 4:2:0 - Open Gate 6K (5952x3968) 30fps from the Lumix S5II.

Let me know if you need anymore info to investigate.

Thanks!
Dan

What happens if you convert that source into ProRes HQ first and then go through the same workflow?
From what is reported here in other threads, I'm getting the impression that Apple and not BM may have screwed something regarding certain H.265 codec flavors on Max and/or Ultra models.
I don't see that here with clips in the same codec from Sony cameras, but we have only M* Pro Macs around by now.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

The problem is, this has not been an issue before 19. Always worked flawlessly with h265. Also, this happened with braw the other day.

Well, if you are sure that your BRAW has no dropped frames, then it's a beta issue.
Apple is not responsible for BRAW decoding.

The only reason I know this is a Beta problem is because I do this all the time. It was never an issue before. Also, if I just render that chunk of video to ProRes via the Delivery page or even Quick Export, it works fine. It’s just the Render In Place method of encoding that’s causing this erratic behavior.

Hi,
DR 19 is amazing! Thank you.
I have a machine that I've been using to test 19.
Render in place was giving me that flashing effect with prores material. I worked around it by rendering in place to Dn/HR. Just a little bug. Alson, sometimes the render doesn't replace the shot in thge timeline as it had before. Also a little bug that is easy to work around.
Again, good job Blackmagic! This stuff is awe inspiring.

For me it exports the file and then Davinci doesn't change the file.

Sadly on my PC even Beta 2 seems to be having this RIP bug.
